General Gossip:

Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1)

It looks like Wicked Lovely, by author Melissa Marr, is going to be made into a movie!  Currently it’s in a definite stage, we’ve long since moved paced the “Optioned for a Movie” phase that seems to be happening with a lot of YA books lately.  Marrs has already met with the producers (Wild West Picture Show Productions) and the very cool screenwriter Caroline Thompson.  (For everyone not  familiar with Caroline, she did Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Secret Garden, and City of Ember, ext.)  Kimberly Peirce is going to be the director, with "Boys Don't Cry" and "Stop-Loss" under her belt.  They’ve already read up to book 5 and things are definitely going fast!  Marrs has already read the script and she gives it her approval.  Author post.

Photobucket If you haven’t heard about this be prepared to find out what you’re missing. Authors Kelly Meding, Lara Adrian, Stacia Kane, Harry Connolly, and Lucy A. Snyder take turns writing a chapter of A Glimpse of Darkness, once a week a chapter is released.  Each new chapter is based on what you the reader wants. So the hottest authors are working together to give you exactly what you want to read.  So far we’re up to chapter 3, join in the fun here.

Dead Witch Walking (Rachel Morgan/The Hollows, #1)

You’re a huge Harrison fan, right?  You own all of her books, go to all the signing you can, maybe even stalk her from afar.  Well now you can really show your support with the Hollows merchandise.  All of the products have Harrisons seal of approval.  So go ahead and check out the new and improved Vampiric Charms.

Zoë Sorensson is perfectly normal – well, as normal as a girl with an obsession with drawing dragons can be. The thing is that she’s always been told she’s special and destined for great things. It’s not just because of her good grades, either. Zoë’s the Wyvern, the one female dragon shapeshifter with special powers. But Zoë is at the bottom of the class when it comes to being Pyr and her powers are AWOL. Worse, there’s no reference book to consult and the last Wyvern is dead…

Everything changes when Zoë’s best friend is bullied and Zoë reacts. Before she can blink twice, her inner dragon is loose, she’s suspended from school and  headed to a boot camp for the Pyr guys she’s known all her life. But soon she’s doubting her powers—and even some of her friendships.

Zoë quickly realizes  that she has to master her powers yesterday – the Pyr are in danger and boot camp is a trap. The Mages want to eliminate all shifters and  the Pyr are next in line—unless Zoë and her friends can solve the riddle, work together and save their own kind…

Review: Wicked Enchantment by Anya Bast

Wicked Enchantment (Dark Magick, #1)Wicked Enchantment by Anya Bast
Genre: Paranormal Romance
When you’re a half incubus, your reputation precedes you…
All eyes are on Gabriel Mac Braire the day he makes his first appearance in the Seelie Court, including those of Aislinn Finvarra. Despite deep bitterness over her last failed relationship, Aislinn cannot help but be curious about the half incubus who is known to possess dark magick, both lethal and sexual in nature. Rumors abound of the women who have become enslaved to his irresistible charms.
So when the Summer Queen of the fae orders Aislinn herself to act as his guide in the court, she is understandably on guard. She’s fallen under the spell of far less persuasive men before. In addition, Gabriel might be more than he seems and his true mission is far from innocent.
This time, Aislinn must protect not only her heart, but her very life…

Thoughts: After reading one of Bast's other books, Witch Blood (Elemental Witches, book 2) I had my doubts about trying this one. Witch Blood wasn't for me. Great idea, but smothered in too much sex. After reading some good reviews about the second book, Cruel Enchantment, I couldn't stop my curiosity reading the first one was my only option.

Let's just say I was pleasantly surprised. It's been hard finding good Fayre PNR. Laurel K. Hamilton's Meredith Gentry series—while I still liked it—is too sexed up to be enjoyable. Jennifer Armintrout's Lightworld/Darkworld series is just all kinds of messed-up—again still enjoyable. This had everything I was looking in a Faye themed paranormal romance that I just couldn't fine anywhere else.

Bast's world takes place where the Faye have been imprisoned for well over 300 years. The Phaendir, a race of humans that mixed blood with the Faye, imprisoned them and intend to keep them that way. The Faye are well treated and are given all of the benefits of the modern world, but they reside within a prison none the less. The humans are divided into factions that want the Faye free, are in support of the Phaendir keeping them imprisoned, or just don't care one way or the other. The Faye are working on a way to free themselves with our with out the support of humans.

The love story in this book takes place between Aishlinn of the Seelie court (basically the “good” faye court) and Gabriel of the Unseelie court. Aishlinn was publicly used and dumped by her last boyfriend because of her high status in the Seelie court. So when Gabriel comes to the Seelie court to join them, she's ready to leave him to the other females of the court. She doesn't need to tangle herself up with a incubus womanizer. Gabriel of course is there specifically targeting her. He doesn't want anything to do with the boring Seelie court. He needs to use his wiles to get Aishlinn to come over to the Unseelie side. Clearly a very standard romantic setup. Bast's excellent writing and attention to detail of her characters really makes a standard love story come to life. I felt invested in both of the lovers, and I felt like I knew both of them. In PNR that's saying something, especially for the male leads. Usually PNR male leads are just a hot body with a name and that's all we get. I loved the fact that I felt like I new Gabriel. So when eventual betrayal takes the happy lovers on a ride, I feel even more invested wanting them to succeed. That's not saying that Aishlinn didn't put up a good resistance too Gabriel. She was a very strong lead, sure she couldn't kick butt until the end of the book, but she knew what was good for her. So it's safe to say that Aishlinn and Gabriel fell in love first, before they fell in bed.

Even though I loved the couple I still felt like something was lacking between them. Some vital ingredient to their chemistry. Bast kept me happy with good lines like these:
“You're so fucking beautiful.”

She gave a short laugh an gazed down into the empty glass. “I'm sure you've said that to all the women you've tried to seduce.”
He tilted her chin up so she was forced to look at him. “I am trying to seduce you, Aishlinn, but I don't mean you're beautiful in the ordinary sense. You are beautiful inside and out, upside and down, straight into your soul.”

The plot for this book just blew me away. The court politics between the Seelie and UnSeelie are deviant. It's even more chilling what occurs within the courts, instead of court against court. This is probably one of the best PNR Faye worlds I have read. Where others seem to be squeezing in as many myths as possible Wicked Enchantment moves at it's own pace and doesn't try to overwhelm the reader with all the different kinds of Faye. Don't get me wrong we get quite a few here, but you can remember which race is which.

Phaendir are another fun part. The reader gets to infiltrate the enemy lines in the head of one messed up Phaendir, Gideon, who wants all Faye wiped away. Which is a really interesting topic considering that a huge majority of Phaendir blood is mixed with Faye. Plus the Phaendir are divided into factions. Currently they are being lead by a man who doesn't think that the Faye need to be eradicated, just contained. The plot thickens when Gideon finds out that pieces to the Fayes escape are falling into the Faye hands. A spell that can only be obtained using a book and a key broken up into three pieces. So far the Faye have the book and one piece of the key.

The cast of characters in this book is fantastic. If your not interested in the Faye escaping and the political intrigue, then this intense cast of characters will keep you crawling back for more. The little tidbits of information we get on the characters in the Wild Hunt, which happens to be led by Gabriel, lingers in my mind. I want more of these side characters! They all interact so well pulling off dramatic hold-your-breath scenes, to laugh out load humor.

Bottom Line:
This turned into a fantastic read. Sure I felt like a key point in the chemistry in the love story was missing, but Bast makes up for it in realistic characters. The political agendas keep you guessing and Phaendir's clutch through the prison walls of the Faye really adds a dangerous edge. So don't worry about this being the same old PNR tale. Bast makes this stand out in the genre and I'll be back for more. More Faye intrigue, more Phaendir agendas, and more of these fantastic characters.

Sexual Content:
Graphic sex scenes.

Rating:  4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

Wednesday Wishes

Hunting for books is one of my favorite things. Finding a new title is my equivalent of "getting rich." Whether the titles been around for a while, brand spanking new, or just not that common Wednesday Wishes is here for me to share them with you.

Sea Sea by Heidi R. Kling

Haunted by recurring nightmares since her mother’s disappearance over the Indian ocean three years before, fifteen-year old California girl Sienna Jones reluctantly travels with her psychiatrist father’s volunteer team to six-months post-tsunami Indonesia where she meets the scarred and soulful orphaned boy, Deni, who is more like Sea than anyone she has ever met.

She knows they can’t be together, so why can’t she stay away from him? And what about her old best friend-turned-suddenly-hot Spider who may or may not be waiting for her back home? And why won’t her dad tell her the truth about her mother’s plane crash? The farther she gets from home, the closer she comes to finding answers.
And Sea’s real adventure begins.

I've been seeing this everywhere, but it skipped my mind to put it on my list. StrippedStripped by Marcia Colette

Someone wants their perfect weapon back, only she’s not coming quietly.Alexa Wells wants her life back. She’s just not sure what that life was. The memories inside her head—a stripper’s—aren’t hers, and before she humiliates herself onstage one more time, she sets out to collect the scattered pieces of her mind. The trail leads to Boston, charges of identity theft and murder, and the real bombshell: a forgotten werewolf lover who insists she’s a werewolf hybrid.

Matt York doesn’t care that she looks at him like he’s been smoking crack between court cases. Now that he has her back he’s not about to let her go it alone, even if she can easily kick ass and take names all by herself. Amnesia only scratches the surface of her problems, and like it or not, she’s stuck with him.

She’s also stuck with Robert Gamboldt, a venture capitalist who’s not above murdering his way to the top. He’s not about to lose his prize possession without playing dirty. It’s a simple enough offer. Be his personal assassin, or go to jail. With options like that, it’s enough to make a hybrid go full-blood.

Warning: Delicious sexual tension with a werewolf who’ll wait as long as it takes for his hybrid werewolf mate to come around.

This usually isn't my kind of book, futuristic ones that is. With a description like that, how could I resist?

The Hollow (The Hollow, #1)The Hollow (The Hollow #1) by Jessica Verday

When Abbey's best friend, Kristen, vanishes at the bridge near Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, everyone else is all too quick to accept that Kristen is dead and rumors fly that her death was no accident. Abbey goes through the motions of mourning her best friend, but privately, she refuses to believe that Kristen is really gone. Then she meets Caspian, the gorgeous and mysterious boy who shows up out of nowhere at Kristen's funeral, and keeps reappearing in Abbey's life. Caspian clearly has secrets of his own, but he's the only person who makes Abbey feel normal again...but also special.

Just when Abbey starts to feel that she might survive all this, she learns a secret that makes her question everything she thought she knew about her best friend. How could Kristen have kept silent about so much? And could this secret have led to her death? As Abbey struggles to understand Kristen's betrayal, she uncovers a frightening truth that nearly unravels her—one that will challenge her emerging love for Caspian, as well as her own sanity.

This was recently released in paperback, I almost forgot how yummy it looked. Past Midnight (Past Midnight, #1)Past Midnight (Past Midnight #1) by Mara Purnhagen

Let me set the record straight. My name is Charlotte Silver and I'm not one of those paranormal-obsessed freaks you see on TV…no, those would be my parents, who have their own ghost-hunting reality show. And while I'm usually roped into the behind-the-scenes work, it turns out that I haven't gone unnoticed. Something happened on my parents' research trip in Charleston—and now I'm being stalked by some truly frightening other beings. Trying to fit into a new school and keeping my parents' creepy occupation a secret from my friends—and potential boyfriends—is hard enough without having angry spirits whispering in my ear. All I ever wanted was to be normal, but with ghosts of my past and present colliding, now I just want to make it out of high school alive….

This sounds really good, plus the reviews seem really promising.

The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine, #1) The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine #1) by Bree Despain

A Prodigal Son

A Dangerous Love

A Deadly Secret

Grace Divine—daughter of the local pastor—always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared and her brother Jude came home covered in his own blood.
Now that Daniel's returned, Grace must choose between her growing attraction to him and her loyalty to her brother.
As Grace gets closer to Daniel, she learns the truth about that mysterious night and how to save the ones she loves, but it might cost her the one thing she cherishes most: her soul.

If you didn’t hear last week  on Lips Don’t Lie, this book (and series) is being optioned for a movie.  So I am so excited that this is finally being released in paperback in November.

Eternal Rider (The Lords of Deliverance, #1)Eternal Rider (Lords of Deliverance #1) by Larissa Ione

They are here.

They ride.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

His name is Ares, and the fate of mankind rests on his powerful shoulders. If he falls to the forces of evil, the world falls too. As one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, he is far stronger than any mortal, but even he cannot fight his destiny forever. Not when his own brother plots against him. Yet there is one last hope. Gifted in a way other humans can't-or won't-understand, Cara Thornhart is the key to both this Horseman's safety and his doom. But involving Cara will prove treacherous, even beyond the maddening, dangerous desire that seizes them the moment they meet. For staving off eternal darkness could have a staggering cost: Cara's life.

Not sure how I feel about this one. I love Ione, but horsemen of the Apocalypse only makes me think "meh."

Knight Angels: Book of Revenge: (Book Two)Knight Angels: Book of Revenge: (Knight Angels #2) by Abra Ebner, Christina Corlett

New characters, New world, but old enemies. Emily struggles to ignore a new friend with emotions that temp her, Wes delves deeper into his past and family while finding friendship isn't reserved for the human race alone, Jane finds out her dear Max isn't what he seems, Gregs friendships cost him more than he expected, and Max forgets that the truth is best. But then again, someone always has to be the liar... Emotional baggage, begrudged enemies, and the bitterness that comes when the honeymoon of their friendship fades... Will the love survive, or as it all just a game?

The covers for this series just make me sigh with appreciation, still need to read the first one.

Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse, #1)Hunger (Horsemen of the Apocalypse #1) by Jackie Morse Kessler

“Thou art the Black Rider. Go thee out unto the world.”

Lisabeth Lewis has a black steed, a set of scales, and a new job: she’s been appointed Famine. How will an anorexic seventeen-year-old girl from the suburbs fare as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse?

Traveling the world on her steed gives Lisa freedom from her troubles at home: her constant battle with hunger, and her struggle to hide it from the people who care about her. But being Famine forces her to go places where hunger is a painful part of everyday life, and to face the horrifying effects of her phenomenal power. Can Lisa find a way to harness that power — and the courage to battle her own inner demons?

Another Horsemen of the Apocalypse theme, sounds cool. Still a little iffy.

The Floating IslandsThe Floating Islands by Rachel Neumeier

The Floating Islands are unlike anything Trei has ever seen: stunning, majestic, and graced with kajurai, men who soar the skies with wings.Trei is instantly sky-mad, and desperate to be a kajurai himself. But neither suspects that their lives will be deeply entwined, and that the fate of the Floating Islands will lie in their hands. . . .Filled with rich language, and told in alternating voices, The Floating Islands is an all-encompassing young adult fantasy read.

Don't know what it is, the cover is kind of bland, but I really like the sound of this book.

Author Interview: Sara Beth Durst

First off I have to give Durst a huge thank you for agreeing to an interview over at Book Whispers.  As everyone knows I’ve been ranting about doing interviews for ages, and finally that dream is reality.  So off to the first ever Author Interview !

_____________________________________________________________________

Sarah Beth Durst is the author of Ice, an Andre Norton Award Finalist for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy, as well as Into the Wild and its sequel Out of the Wild. Her next novel is Enchanted Ivy, a YA novel about getting into college. You know, taking the campus tour, talking to the gargoyles, flirting with the were-tigers, riding the dragons...

_____________________________________________________________________

BW:  In your own words introduce yourself. EnchantedIvyCover_LoRes

SBD:  Hi. I'm Sarah. I'm a writer. I have really curly hair. Um... that about sums it up.

BW:  How does Enchanted Ivy break away from other books in its genre?

SBD:  It is a true story about the college application process.

Okay, it's not exactly "true" in the sense of, you know, being true, but it is about that very real (and very
overwhelming) getting-into-college obsession that hits junior year of high school.

Also, gargoyles that talk, boys who turn into tigers, and dragons that hide secrets.

BW:  What are your favorite scenes to write, or even a favorite scene from this book?

SBD:  I love to write scenes with dragons, due to the inherent awesomeness of dragons. And due to the fact
that I secretly want to ride a dragon. (Yes, a large reason I write is wish fulfillment. In fact, my method of
outlining a book is as follows: "Given what happened in the previous scene and what my characters want/
fear, what is the coolest thing that could happen next?")

BW:  Do you have a favorite book out of the ones you've written?

SBD:  Enchanted Ivy is my newest baby so of course I adore it. Ice (my Arctic beauty-and-the-beast story) is close to my heart because I wrote it for my husband, even though he's not a polar bear. And Into the Wild and Out of the Wild were lots of fun to write because I got to have fairy-tale characters infest my hometown. But a favorite? I really can't choose. I love all my babies!

All books linked to goodreads.
Into the Wild Out of the Wild
Ice Enchanted Ivy

BW:  Some authors say that their ideas hit them while dreaming, or even in the shower. Where do most of your ideas occur?

SDB:  I wish I could say something artsy, such as "ideas occur to me whilst I take long walks on the moors."  Or something quirky, like "ideas occur to me only when I balance on one foot and whistle." Except there aren't any moors around me, and I can't whistle. (Also can't blow up balloons. But that's unrelated.)

Honestly, most of my ideas occur to me while writing. There's something about the physical act of typing that unlocks my brain. In fact, sometimes my fingers surprise my brain. I've always liked the E. M. Forster quote: "How can I know what I think till I see what I say?"

BW:  Your site states at age 10 you gave up your dream of being Wonder Woman for the dream of writing. What was it that inspired you to change your mind?

So You Want to Be a Wizard (Young Wizards, #1)SBD:  It was the invisible jet. She's completely visible, soaring through the air in a seated position. Just not cool. Also, at age ten, I read Tamora Pierce's Alanna, Diane Duane's So You Want to Be a Wizard, and Diana Wynne Jones's Witch Week, and I thought to myself, "I want to do this!!!"

BW:  When you're in a writing jam, is there a particular author you look to for inspiration? One that makes you ask, "What would insert author's name here do?" Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, #1)

SBD:  Tamora Pierce. I love how she builds her plots like a snowball on a mountainside that grows and grows
until it comes barreling down in an avalanche of awesome. Plus, she has talking badgers.

BW:  Are there any plans for more books in the Enchanted Ivy universe, or other projects you're
working on?

SBD:  My next book (coming fall 2011 from S&S) is Drink, Slay, Love. It's about a vampire girl who develops a conscience after she is stabbed through the heart by a unicorn's horn. I'm really, really, really excited about it. It's been a phenomenally fun writing experience.

BW:  In the paranormal/fantasy genre what are some of your favorite reads?

Raised by Wolves (Raised by Wolves, #1)

In addition to the authors/books I already mentioned, I also love A Fistful of Sky by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Jack the Giant-Killer (or Jack of Kinrowen) by Charles de Lint, the Tiffany Aching series by Terry Pratchett, and the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. Recent reads that I loved include Shade byJeri Smith-Ready, Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, Thief Eyes by Janni Lee Simner, and
Paranormalcy by Kiersten White.

BW:   Between a vampire love interest or a werewolf love interest which do you prefer?

SBD:  I think I'd prefer a werewolf love interest to a vampire love interest because I like sunlight. I'd become depressed if I had to switch to hanging out at night all the time... Oh, wait, are you talking real life or fiction? In fiction, I like them both.

BW:  Go wild! Let us know something funny about you, share something that's on your mind, or anything else that's important about your books.

SBD:  If anyone reading this wants to be a writer… the best advice that I know to give is: write. Write as often as you can, as much as you can. Don't wait for large chunks of time, and don't wait for inspiration. If anyone reading this wants to be Wonder Woman… have you considered writing?

Thanks so much for interviewing me!

Well thank you for stopping in for this interview.  If it’s possible I’m even more eager to get my hands on Enchanted Ivy, which come out October 12th.  So start counting down the days!

Lips Don’t Lie: Author Gossip

As a reader I always want the download on what's going on with authors. Do they have new books coming out, how’s their latest tour going, any thing juicy! So, I decided to bring the news to my readers. I'm lurking around all of those author blogs anyway, might as well do something productive.

Again thanks to everyone who’ve  been here supporting this feature from the start.  It’s a lot of work, but all of your enthusiasm for author news keeps me going.

This week I ask that you help spread the enthusiasm by sharing this post. I’ve got some easy sharing features at the end of this post, or you can share however you want.

Please, don’t feel like I’m demanding you share.  I just want to give everyone the chance to catch the latest author gossip.

-Thank you

General Gossip:

Photobucket

If you haven’t heard about this be prepared to find out what you’re missing.

Don’t miss out Chapter One is UP!

Red-Headed Stepchild (Sabina Kane, #1)

Long time fans who have been following the Sabina Kane series have always known that author Jaye Wells originally meant for the series to be a trilogy. Originally. Wells journey with Sabina has come to the conclusion that there’s just too much to tell in just a trilogy, the adventure is just beginning. So after Green Eyed Demon (book 3) we can expect a “blue” book. There’s even a fifth book in the plans.  Wells is hoping to get them out faster to fans.

So Sabina fans rejoice the rides not over yet, and you knows what surprises the series is going to bring.

Looks like another authors books will be getting the graphic novel treatment.  Richelle Meads’s Dark Swan series will be joining the ranks of books, to graphic novels.

To see more of this awesome art for the series check out Sea Lions press release about the whole shebang.

The Dark Divine (The Dark Divine, #1)

The Dark Divine by Bree Despian is a book I’ve had my eye on for a while. The main plot focuses on a girl who falls in love with a boy who turns out to be a werewolf. Sound like your kind of book, because it’s definitely sings to me?

Apparently Ralph Winter, creator of X-men, has his eyes on this book too.  But he wants eyes to be on The Dark Divine movie!  Winter is going on the appeal that Twilight movies are having for viewers.  I’m not sure if I like Twilight, but I’m eager to see this book on the big screen!

Sadly only the rights have been bought at this point, but here’s hoping.  The first step has been made, let’s hope they take the plunge!

Author post.

Outlander (Outlander, #1)

There have been a lot of rumors going on about the adaptation of Outlander to screen since Essential Entertainment optioned for it. To lay some of those rumors to rest here’s what Gabaldon knows after meeting with the two main people connected with Essential Entertainment.

  1. Randall Wallace is no longer the script writer.  They have someone new who should have the script by the end of this year.  This new script writer hasn’t signed any contracts so nothing is set in stone right now.

Word is Katherine Heigl's mother is a fan of the books, and after her mothers recommendation Heigl read the books and liked them soon becoming a fan. Liked them enough to play Claire? This speculation was actually posted in the New York times. Gabaldon doesn’t know how it will pan out as other actresses have said they were interested and no dice. If Heigl would sign, it would definitely give the show the financing in needs.

The people feel that the “usual suspects” in the acting community are not fit for playing the role of Jamie, and would probably get an unkown. Gabaldon did mention who she had in mind.

-a very good, tall, red-headed, _young_ SCOTTISH actor named Allan Scott-Douglas.

The people were interested when she made her opinion known on the topic.

Are you a Jane Austin fan, and a lover of the paranormal? Well rejoice! A new anthology featuring Colleen Gleason, Mary Balogh, Janet Mullany and Susan Krinard are taking a Jane Austin title and rewriting it with a paranormal twist.

Gleason states:

I've taken Austen's Northanger Abbey and given it a Gardella twist...this story takes place about twenty years after the final book in the Victoria Gardella series. And although you won't actually see any familiar characters on the page, you will find out a few fun things...like, whatever happened to that weasly George Starcasset?? And what is the gender of Victoria's baby?

Molly Haper’s latest series finally get some faces. These are book one and book two of her Naked Werewolf series—in that order.  They have a very nice chic-lit feel to them.  Author Post.

How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #1) How to Fall for a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #2)

Anya Bast’s new covers were released on the 21st, but here’s for those of you who haven’t seen them.  This has to be my favorite cover in the Dark Magic series yet.  Author post.

Latest Blogossip:

We’ve all seen the posts about SPEAK by Laurie Halse Anderson being on the banned list.  Whether you’ve seen it on a favorite reviewers blog, or even a favorite author.  I’m really proud of the voices ringing out.  No ones throwing bricks in outrage, but no matter the reader everyone is standing up for the right of free reading.

I found the most interesting results from authors, who have a certain interest in keeping free voices on the street.  Some have even gone as far as to host a giveaways for Speak.

Personally I’ve never read speak, it’s outside of my genre. Sure I’ve come across it and have thought, “I really need to read this.”  So when the objection was posted by an associate professor of management at Missouri State University, Wesley Scroggins, I couldn’t say to much to his claims that Speak should be

“classified as soft pornography”

Personally rape is not pornography, unless you’re some twisted psycho.  After further research and the help of an author’s post I found this “soft pornography” and only found the hard reality of rape.  Later in the book it even goes on to state that the girl had no idea it was rape she had witnessed because she was sheltered. These are the words from the book that really hit home to me, and make me wonder if Scroggins has fully read the book.

I can understand a parent’s desire to shelter their children from the ugliness in life. But as a former child who was sheltered to such a degree that I didn’t even understand what I’d seen, or what Guy had been attempting to do to me, I applaud the effort to educate kids on the subject of sexual assault, painful though it may be.

I would love to share the author’s post who helped me to fully understand what Scroggin’s is trying to “protect” kids from. Check out Jeaniene Frost’s eye opening post.
