Review: Allegiance of Honor

Allegiance of Honor (Psy-Changeling, book 15) by Nalini Singh

Allegiance of Honor (Psy-Changeling #15)

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Edition Reviewed: Ebook
Amazon: Paperback | Kindle
Goodreads: Allegiance of Honor (15)

The “unparalleled romantic adventure”* of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as a new dawn begins for the Psy-Changeling world...

The Psy-Changeling world has undergone a staggering transformation and now stands at a crossroads. The Trinity Accord promises a new era of cooperation between disparate races and groups. It is a beacon of hope held together by many hands: Old enemies. New allies. Wary loners.

But a century of distrust and suspicion can’t be so easily forgotten and threatens to shatter Trinity from within at any moment. As rival members vie for dominance, chaos and evil gather in the shadows and a kidnapped woman’s cry for help washes up in San Francisco, while the Consortium turns its murderous gaze toward a child who is the embodiment of change, of love, of piercing hope: A child who is both Psy…and changeling.

To find the lost, protect the vulnerable—and save Trinity—no one can stand alone. This is a time of loyalty across divisions, of bonds woven into the heart and the soul, of heroes known and unknown standing back to back and holding the line. But is an allegiance of honor even possible with traitors lurking in their midst?

Review:

When word hit the bookverse that Allegiance of Honor would have multiple points of view spanning across all of the characters from the previous Psy-Changleing books my heart was all a flutter. Upon finishing it I knew Allegiance of Honor was everything I could have hoped for and more! Especially since this acts as a “season 1” end. Opening the series up to a new arc and so on.

The cast of the Psy-Changeling world is vast. Even as a hardcore fan I need reminders and NO that silly glossary of characters in the front is no help. So check out Wicked Scribes online for their Psy-Changeling character guide. It will keep your mind straight it did for me and I think that's why I truly enjoyed the book more. Not all the characters could be present, but many make brief appearances or cameos. So it's nice to quickly look up a name.

The vastness and epic nature of the Psy-Changeling series has always been it's biggest appeal to me. Not to mention it's rich history and world coupled with wonderful characters. I loved getting to “wrap up” some of my favorite characters' stories. While still moving the series ahead. If you think about it Allegiance of Honor wasn't that different from previous entries. There is a main couple followed that needs to be hooked up. However, there is more time given to the multiple points of views. Which I've found out is apparently something a lot of readers can't stand.

So if you're used to changing POVs it's nothing. If you don't mind them and have enjoyed them in the series this will be a treat.

Allegiance of Honor is splendid. It kept me worried about the future as the PsyNet is still not stable and the future is shaky. (Yeah, we kind of know it probably won't go THERE.) My time spent with this beautiful cast made me happy, sad, joyful, cry tears of sorrow and joy. It was all there and I truly got to appreciate the expanse of the cast. The characters that I have come to cherish.

It's odd that some fans loved this entry and others hated it. Enough so that I had a few Goodreads friends swear to not touch future books in the series. To which I say you guys are dumb—I love you! I'm totally on board for Season 2 and can not wait to see what characters we get to explore. The new growing pack in Alasaka? The water changelings? So on! Guys the sky is the limit!

Keep going strong Nalini Singh. Your worlds and writing rocks.

Content Warning: Some sex scenes and graphic humor. Characters have been tortured and threats are being made against children. Nothing too scary for the series. (Basically the norm.)

Review: Shards of Hope

Shards of Hope (Psy-Changeling, book 14) by Nalini Singh

shards-of-hope

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Edition Reviewed: eBook
Amazon: Paperback | Kindle
Goodreads: Shards of Hope (14)

The “smoldering heat, epic romance, and awesome action” of Nalini Singh’s New York Times bestselling series continues as two Arrows find themselves caught in a chilling conspiracy that spans all three races…

Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.

This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

Review:

It's so surprising to find out that a romance between two Arrows can feel so sweet and innocent. While I found myself a hair's breath away from being all consumed with fiery passion, I found myself happy to be in the middle of an adorable romance. Which is funny because Zaira is is one tough cookie, and refers to herself as a monster throughout the book. She's intense, scary sometimes, and thinks a bit differently. But I stand by what I say. The romance between both Aden and Zaira was adorable.

Maybe that's because both never got to experience true childhoods and with both their personalities they can see their love—and one another—in childish wonder. Especially since they both see the dark side of the world. The terrors and horrors. Zaira's selfishness and fire balances out Aden's over protectiveness and selfless care of others. That's not to say their not both great people. Zaira is amazing and I have to be honest the way she kept saying she was a monster got old fast. Because it's clear that she is a wonderful person and she cares deeply about others. Maybe it's just the contrast of how Silence made her believe that by defending herself as a child that she was the person that was evil. I liked that Aden pushed her and let her know that he wanted her. However, it was Zaira observing her own actions that made her think that maybe she wasn't a monster.

Shards of Hope excellently displays the world after Silence has fallen and the Psy are taking tentative steps into their new hope. With the Empaths at the center of it, and the Arrows finding there footing in the world. It's a beautiful thing to see Aden's dreams for his Arrows. How he wants them to be more. To be a family. Much how Snowdancer and DarkRiver are. It's haunting and touching to see how not only the children find hope and a new life, but the senior Arrows. It was fabulous to see the children become children. And the adult Arrows start to thaw out. To see some romances spark up! To just see the joy. Even as some very dark events haunt the squad as Aden tries to lead them into the brighter future.

This book is definitely an intro into the new world that the Psy-Changeling books are going. A stepping stone as a new enemy appears on the horizon. The Consortium, a group that mean trouble for all three races. They're crafty, and while are heroes come out on top this round it's clear that the Consortium is quite the enemy. They’ve learned from Pure Psy and the Council's mistakes. It's also really fun trying to guess who might be the mastermind behind it all. (Come on we all had fun speculating who the Ghost could be, even after knowing 100% who it was.) It was like watching a crazy, and more exciting, game of chess. There were some devastating moments.

Oh, and RainFire is introduced. A new group of cats who are trying to setup and build their own pack! I loved how they helped inspire Aden and became allies. The members presented are characters I hope to see in future books. I have my fingers crossed.

Overall Singh does it again. I know a lot of readers are complaining about how it's basic romance setup. You know the two characters involved are going to end up together by the end of the book. However, Singh puts so much emotion into it I never get tired. Each new couple are their own people. No two characters can be mistaken for the other. Plus the world building is so fantastic that it not only influences the characters, but is influenced by them. I love how intricate the world is. How Singh steers her world and creates the politics! Not to mention the dynamics between humans, Psy, and Changelings. It's all so believable, and I'm invested. Shards of Hope is very much a book of hope. For those who believe they're damaged and can no longer be human, the hope for a brighter future, the hope that the three races can truly interact together, and hope itself. I enjoy how much attention and importance Singh's books are about family and friends. The different aspects of them. Those values and ideas definitely shine here. Bravo! This series, and the world, is not running out of steam.

(For me the amount of characters and all the cameos are a treat! I love seeing all my beloved characters come back. However, there are a lot of characters and sometimes the guide at the front is not enough. Check out Wicked Scribe's character guide if you need a brush up. I know sometimes my brain stalls out. Especially with a year in-between installments.)

Sexual Content: Sexual humor, some villains threaten rape, and some bedroom scenes.

Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she'll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

Review:

Ah. The sweetness that only Singh's Paranormal Romance books can give me. Silence has officially fallen and now the Psy need a cure. Each new book had me chomping at books for this! While many readers have been unhappy with too much world building and focus on the Psy I've been in heaven. I've said it before and I'll say it again Singh has ruined me for other PNR series. World building. That's the key to any great book. Intricate plots that don't end after the HEA is given to the current lead couples. Follow through. Being able to visit and see how events are affecting beloved couples/characters.

Most importantly the current couple of the book are affected by what is happening in the world. They're fully interacting in it. There's consequences for their actions as well as outside factors altering their lives. So each couple is unique. The process in which they fall in love is unique. Sure it can be said that it's basically the same Happily Ever After formula. But that's true of every romance book. (Except a few brave ones that decide to be different.) No matter what PNR series you read there is a formula. Sure a lot of characters in the Psy-Changeling verse share some fundamental personality traits, morals, and other things. But in the end I know all of the characters and each one has their own personality. Some of those similarities is also what makes characters in Singh's world friends.

OK, I’ve shared my thoughts on that matter. Moving on.

Vasic is a character I’ve always been curious about. Come on he's the kind of character fans of the series just swoon for. Plus, in the past ice cold Psy men have lead to some steamy-steamy reading. Most importantly I always wondered who he would be paired with. Personally I didn't want him to be paired with another warrior. No in my hearts of hearts, I wanted him to be with an Empath. So what a surprise when Ivy walks in. These two are amazing together. That's all I'll say on that matter so nothing is taken away from readers.

What I will say is that Singh does a wonderful job of how “Silence” was probably never truly worked. It was helpful on some levels true. Silence helped  Psychopaths and killers seem legit, while helping those with scary powers. Nothing is black and white. And maybe there are already many Psy not fully Silenced. It's seen here in Ivy's parents. How despite being under Silence they were flawed enough to be parents. To take actions to save their child. For me that made me think of a certain Empath that started this whole series and her relationship with her mother.

Shield Of Winter is intense. I had faith that some type of fix would come, because it was made clear that a number of the Psy characters we've come to love would not abandon ship. That doesn't mean that it was any less intense. When finally the cure is realized, I thought it was perfect. This is a new era for the series and the Psy. The politics, maneuvering, and factions that come up are so realistic that I commend Singh for putting all that extra work in. For making this marvelous world so rich.

Vasic and Ivy's love pulled at my heartstrings. Not to mention Rabbit. Apparently Singh can not only write men, women, children, teens and so on. She can right pets. This is a wonderful stepping stone into the Psy's new future. It's dark, lives are lost, and even with hope at the end of the tunnel there's still plenty of enemies hoping it will fail. But I've always loved the aspects of love, friendship, family, and hope that this series explores. Shield of Winter the perfect follow-up to Heart of Obsidian. Yet again I have more characters to love and care about in one of my favorite series.

Sexual Content: Sexual humor, steamy bedroom scenes, and you know the drill!

Review:

Don't read this. No really. After finishing this short story I loath Nathan. Now, every time I read about poor Tammy and Nate it will simply be tainted. Sometimes there shouldn't be origin stories for our favorite couples.

Nathan is absolutely horrid to Tammy. He treats her like a brainless idiot. Like a woman who needs to be looked out for and all of her decisions made by someone else because she's just a woman. And yes, I think I'm being fair. Maybe even not harsh enough. It was painful watching Nathan destroy her confidence and happiness bit by bitter bit. Then when Tammy finally realizes that she enabled him and supported him by being so kind and accommodating it was like I could finally see the light. She pulls some drastic stuff and I was all for it. Then of course Nathan cave mans her over and they're at HEA.

Yet, when the story ended I couldn't help but think that she gave in too easy. That she deserved better. Soooooo much better. A man who thinks that he knows best for “his” woman has never been a story that interests me, and I couldn’t see Nathan’s point of view at all.  The only thing I wanted for Tammy was for her to find another man. Even the whole anniversary oogley stuff couldn't change my opinion. I'm afraid to read anymore books in case every Tammy and Nathan moment forward is tainted. If you have to read this out of curiosity I urge you to wait until after book ten, Kiss of Snow. Man I wish I would have listened to some of my GR friends. This short story should be labeled: DO NOT READ.

Sexual Content: Nothing to scare you. Some painfully awkward moments between the two.

1/5- I couldn't finish it or wish I hadn't.

Discover the exhilarating risks of passion in the breathtaking new Psy-Changeling novel by Nalini Singh, the New York Times bestselling “alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist)…

Adria, wolf changeling and resilient soldier, has made a break with the past—one as unpredictable in love as it was in war. Now comes a new territory, and a devastating new complication: Riaz, a SnowDancer lieutenant already sworn to a desperate woman who belongs to another.

For Riaz, the primal attraction he feels for Adria is a staggering betrayal. For Adria, his dangerous lone-wolf appeal is beyond sexual. It consumes her. It terrifies her. It threatens to undermine everything she has built of her new life. But fighting their wild compulsion toward one another proves a losing battle.

Their coming together is an inferno…and a melding of two wounded souls who promise each other no commitment, no ties, no bonds. Only pleasure. Too late, they realize that they have more to lose than they ever imagined. Drawn into a cataclysmic Psy war that may alter the fate of the world itself, they must make a decision that might just break them both.

Review:

Holy smoke'n hotness Nalini Singh! What are you doing to me. No really? Just when you think nothing can get hotter then Sienna and Hawke from the last book, Singh drops an even better—hotter—couple in our laps! Adria and Riaz, they're my new favorite couple. Let's be honest I never, ever, claim to pick favorites.

Adria was a bit discouraging for me because I really disliked her from Play of Passion. She was in a horrible relationship, one bad enough to put the fear in Indigo. Like onions, every character Singh creates has layers. Adria turned out to be amazing. She might not be a Sentinel or Lieutenant, but she was a fabulous edition to the strong “warrior” women of the Psy-Changeling universe. Adria for me was unlikeable right at the beginning, it took a bit before I could see past my initial reaction to her. Once she started to interact with Riaz things started to look up. Because she finally started to open up. She's an incredible woman and that horrible relationship she was in, it was so legit that I felt bad when things went south.

Riaz was simply amazing! His suffering over the fact that he had to let his mate go was heartbreaking. To have the kind of strength to protect his mate by not going after her was (cue the applause) inspiring. By doing this he found something even stronger, love that defied a mating bond. Well done, Singh.

Riaz and Adria's story was so wonderful I felt a little grumpy that Tangle of Need was so much of an extension of Sienna and Hawke story. Yes, I love them both so much! Yet I feel a little grumpy by how much page time the stole from Riaz and Adria. Time I felt could have even deepened their story further. But that's just a mild grump from me. Riley and Mercy have some fantastic news and I loved getting time with other characters as well. The true civil war in the Net is coming into play and the world of Psy and Changeling are merging despite Pure Psy's attempts to purify the net. At times it's beautiful to see how Silence couldn't stop love and good intentions. Even as the horror of the breaking Silence is still there.

There are so many things going on here! It's a rush. The good kind. It just stuns me every time I read a Psy-Changeling book how much world building and depth is here. No. Really. It doesn't get much better than this. Oh, and be warned killer cliffhanger. You will want the next book on hand. Because the Psy civil war is here, and the bigger stuff is happening in the next book. Tangle of Need it proof that no matter what you think, this series is just going to get better and better.

Sexual Content: Steamy scenes ahead, and loads of sexual humor.

5/5- Fabulous, a beautiful obsession!
