Review: Spider's Bite

Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep

"My name is Gin, and I kill people."

My name is Gin Blanco. They call me the Spider — the most feared assassin in the South (and a part-time cook at the Pork Pit BBQ joint.) As a Stone elemental, I can hear the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet and feel the vibrations of the soaring mountains above me, though I don't use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.

After a ruthless Air elemental double-crossed me and killed my handler, I'm out for revenge. And I'll exterminate anyone who gets in my way. I may look hot in a miniskirt, but I'm still one of the bad guys. Which is why I'm in trouble when irresistibly rugged Detective Donovan Caine agrees to help. The last thing a coldhearted killer needs when she's battling a magic more powerful than her own is a sexy distraction ... especially when he wants her dead just as much as the enemy.

Thoughts:

With a series name like Elemental Assassin, I was expecting all kinds of awesomeness—and the book delivers. Even the cover is lethal!

Assassin characters have always interested me, if a book has a main character that's an assassin I'm there. Sadly enough, not to many authors have been able to pull off this character. The means to how they got to that point are generic, and the character is some how elevated as being a good person and their blood spilling ways justified.

Estep really makes Gin a believable killer. She didn't wake up one day and say, “Hey I think I'd like to kill people, that's a good career path!” A chain of tragic childhood events bring her to a point where she needs to survive, and things fall in to place for her to become an assassin. Gin has even carved out the best of life she can manage being an assassin. Her handler and son have become her family, and she tries to aspire to be a cook when she's not killing. Gin was a great character, she new what she was doing was wrong and even refers to herself as a monster at points in the book. Gin does keep to a moral code and tries to only go after “bad” people. She even does some “pro-bono” work for some abused people.

Following Gin on one of her kills at the beginning of the book is really fun (I know, I know we're killing people here). The work and planning that goes into each kill and all of the steps that need to be taken to remain anonymous. After all our girl is the Spider, one of the best killers out there and in high demand.

The love interest was such a great match. He's the only clean cop in the city, and after Gin killed his unsavory partner, he's out to bring the killer in. Gin has had her eye on him ever since, his purity or the fact that he's trying to find her draws her in. The events end up leaving the cop with only Gin to help him as the whole system is corrupt and all he can do to stay alive is trust in the honor of an assassin. Watching his growing attraction to Gin was definitely a highlight of this book for me. After all he's a saint, how can he be attracted to such an evil person. Someone who killed his partner. Maybe his world isn't black and white, maybe there are shades of gray.

The other side characters are very colorful and very lovable. Each one was a treat on the page and I loved getting more information on them. They all interacted in the world and made for great dialogue. The giant evil villain that is probably going to be spanning this series is fantastic. I love the fact that both evil villains in this book are female—women evil villains always seem to be more vicious and absolute fun!

My only complaint is the F-bomb is thrown out there a lot, like candy at a parade. Gin is a kick-booty, very witty character she can come across just as cool minus the swearing. Or maybe just a little less, as it is part of her character.

Bottom Line:

It's great learning about our witty assassin as the story progresses. I completely fell for our killing lady and I am DIEING for more! (Every pun intended.) Need is the word that pops into mind about this book. I NEED to know where Gin is headed now that she's “retiring” and that cliffhanger ending. The love story is on the NEED to know what's going to happen next. Just give me the next book, I NEED it.

Sexual Content:

Naughty thoughts are running through Gins mind about our good cop and there is a very steamy closet scene. Oh, and some heavy petting at the bar.

5/5- Fabulous, a beautiful obsession.

Stolen

Stolen by Lucy Christopher
Sixteen year old Gemma is kidnapped from Bangkok airport and taken to the Australian Outback. This wild and desolate landscape becomes almost a character in the book, so vividly is it described. Ty, her captor, is no stereotype. He is young, fit and completely gorgeous. This new life in the wilderness has been years in the planning. He loves only her, wants only her. Under the hot glare of the Australian sun, cut off from the world outside, can the force of his love make Gemma love him back? The story takes the form of a letter, written by Gemma to Ty, reflecting on those strange and disturbing months in the outback. Months when the lines between love and obsession, and love and dependency, blur until they don't exist - almost.

    Books Transformed!
March and April saw a lot of DVD releases of some movies based on books, so I thought I'd do some thing extra here. I'm just going to share a little bit of my opinion on the ending results.  (The ratings are based on how I review my books.)
    •  Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging
Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging: Confessions of Georgia Nicolson (Confessions of Georgia Nicolson, #1)This book had interested me for while, mainly because of the awesome title. Sadly it's outside of my usual genre coverage and I never bothered to read it. Luckily for me it suddenly popped up as a rental in the Red Box. Truly this movie was just an average tale about a slightly nerdy girl trying to make this year the year she gets everything. She wants her Sex God (hot guy), good snogging, and to drop the popular girl from her rain of supremacy. Perhaps it was the British humor and slang, but I fell in love with it! Sure if I was reading it I would have been bored to tears, but the movie was really fun. The actors were too much fun to watch!

    Rating: 3/5

    • The Time Traveler's WifeThe Time Traveler's Wife
I've always loved the idea behind The Time Traveler's Wife, the idea of a love story happening on so many levels: past, present, and future. Unfortunately I've never been able to get into the book, I've tried so many times, even after watching the move I tried again. Luckily I completely enjoyed the movie and I was allowed to finally experience this fantastic story.  The movie is told in such a way that you never lose track of where you are a jumping through time. It's been such a long time since I've watched a movie where I've been completely involved in the characters on screen. The wife's pain was so tangible and the relationship is beautiful to watch. For anyone who may not have watched it I don't want to give too much away. You just have to experience it.

    Rating: 5/5

    • New Moon (Twilight, #2)New Moon
First off, I hate Twilight. (Note, I'm not saying dislike, that's to light a term.) I enjoyed the first book and I really enjoyed the first movie, Twilight. New Moon was where I started to hate the series. Sticky points for me were Bella's complete depression with night terror and self loathing/hatred/pity. Oh, and I can't forget those Edward hallucinations, trust me I could go on, but I don't want to spread the hate. (Plus I know I'm probably going to hear grief about this. ^_-) So I was really iffy about the movie. I really wanted to love it, but I new if it stuck to the book I was going to hate it.  The movie really did stick with the book really well. But . . . I enjoyed it! Sure I was laughing my had off at the hallucinations (seriously I was tearing up I was laughing so hard). Some how it works on screens, I found humor in her misery and I got involved in the movie in away I couldn't allow myself to in the book. Plus, I think there was more action with the evil redheaded-vampire. So I'm way pleased with this movie adaptation, because at last I can enjoy the Twilight series. Can't wait for the next movie!

    Rating: 4/5

    • The Frog Princess (Tales of the Frog Princess, #1)The Princess and the Frog
This movie was inspired by The Frog Princess, which I read just before the movie came out. (Sadly I haven't posted a review yet for it.) In this case a can strongly say I like the movie better then the book. The book was really cute, don't get me wrong. Disney adaptation just had more. I liked the prince in this one where in the book I didn't, and so on. My only compliant with the movie is the music, it just didn't seem as awesome as the other princess movies Disney has put out. Usually the lyrics stick in my head and I'm trying to get a hold of the soundtrack ASAP. In this case I think the movie would of almost been better with out music, even the evil villain song wasn't catching. (I have a thing for evil villain songs, they simply rock!)

    Rating: 4/5

I know there are a lot of other book to movie adaptations that came out in April, but I didn't watch them until May. So I'm saving them for that Month by Month. Feel free to let me know what you thought about any of them, I'm really curious!

    On a side note:
I'm going to be traveling this week, a wonderful family vacation. So I might be hard put on getting a INTERNET connection this week. Our ending destination, my Grandmas, will have a connection so I'll still continue to blog. Where ever theres a connection I will try and post regularly, but I will put up a notice when I'm going to be out and about. I'm hoping this VK time will give me a chance to catch up on my reviews, which I got behind on because of poor health.

Trying to figure out which books to bring along is panning out to be really hard. It's worse then figuring out which clothes, shoes, and jewelry to bring combined!

    Review: Dream Girl

Dream Girl Dream Girl by Lauren Mechling

    Charm galore.”—Kirkus Reviews

Claire Voyante has been having strange visions ever since she can remember. But the similarity between her name and her talents is purely coincidental. The name is French and unlike the psychics on TV, she can’t solve crimes or talk to the dead.

But that all changes on Claire’s 15th birthday, when her grandmother gives her something a little more extraordinary than one of her old cocktail dresses: a strange black-and-white onyx cameo on a gold chain. It’s not long before Claire’s world becomes a whole lot clearer. And a whole lot more dangerous.

    “Plenty of entertainment.”—Publishers Weekly

“Lauren Mechling weaves a hilarious tale out of mystical dreams, high school terror, and haute couture. . . . A fun, fast-paced, totally engrossing read.”—Kristen Miller, author of Kiki Strike: Inside Shadow City

    Thoughts:

From the gorgeous cover to the enticing words, “Dreaming just got Dangerous.” How could I not be crazy about it. Plus there were some pretty positive reviews floating around on some blogs.

My excitement-bubble popped after about page 30. That's about the point when I realized this book didn't have anything else to offer me. It was slow going, and the main character, Claire, felt like just another character. She didn't stand out, in fact she felt like she should being fading into the background. The interesting side characters should have been given more page time. The dreams were silly, and not silly good. They didn't make much sense, and it was little things that connected them back to reality.

Out of the hope for the mentioned dangerous dreams I forced myself to read, and read. Then I got to a point when I just couldn't force myself to read. Really forcing yourself to read is not healthy.

So after I realized I couldn't stand the fact that the main love interest was a guy who currently had a girlfriend, who at the moment had kissed the main character—but was still groveling to the girlfriend. A new rich best friend and a revengeful family after a "stolen"  billion dollar ketchup recipe I stopped.

    Bottom Line:

This is a cute book, a very cute boring and pointless book. I clung on to page 210 before I decided to put myself out of my misery, I even read two other books while reading this one. There are other authors who do clairvoyant/medium character books better. In fact if the clairvoyant part of this book was taken out it wouldn't have lost much, it was like a little side thought to ride the paranormal obsession out there.

    Sexual Content:

    A couple of kisses.

    1/5- I couldn't finish it or wish I hadn't

    Review: Marked by Passion

Marked by Passion (The Guardians of Destiny, #1) Marked by Passion by Kate Perry

Gabrielle Sansouci Chin is turned for a loop when she receives the ancient scroll that she was marked to protect. Her possession only means one thing...her father is dead.

Gabe has no idea how she is going to balance her new responsibilities as a Guardian being a painter by day and a bartender by night. Having just been contracted for her new "Enter the Light" series, Gabe tries to handle it all.

But it seems like her luck has run dry when she's ill trained to take her proper place as guardian, having a dry spell at painting, and for some reason can't help but fall for Rhys Llewellyn, the sexy Brit who offers his help in more ways than one.

    Thoughts:

Gabe is a struggling artist who's finally getting her big break, with her first gallery showing . Unfortunately the past she has run away from has caught up with her when an old family heirloom shows up. It's the family heirloom she was marked to protect, the very item she walked away from after she killed her mother trying to control its powers. Not only does she get uncontrollable earth powers from the scroll, but her father's ghost is connected to it and he's determined to make Gabe take hold of her destiny. If things weren't crazy enough her brother shows up to patch things up and take the scroll back, since Gabe has never wanted it in the first place. On top of that Rhys shows up the night Gabe first gets the scroll. Gabe doesn't believe in coincident and she has to battle her ever growing desire for Rhys, because he very well might want her demise.

I don't now how I ended up getting this book, probably in one of my massive book purchases where I get 20-30 books all at once. After chatting about some new debut PNR authors with a buddy from goodreads I had to finally check it out. Especially when she gushed that this was the next biggest thing, once it caught on of course. She claimed it was Kresely Cole good, even as good as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. With gushes like that let me tell you, the expectations were up.
Gabe, or Gabriella, was a very strong female lead. Who was haunted by the fact that she had killed her mother because of her inability to control the Book of Earth, which she had been trained to protect all her life. After the funeral she had promptly ran away and went to follow her dreams. Let's just say even though Gabe is a strong female lead who can still kick some butt, even though she could still use some long neglected training, she does a lot of running in this book. She gets this magical artifact that gives her devastating powers that she keeps losing control of, but she does nothing to try and learn how to control it for over half the book.

Rhys was an interesting character and made for a mysterious love interest. Heavy on the mysterious. We learn he came to kill and take the powers of Gabe's scroll, but falls in love with her. He fights to make it big in the world and is now filthy rich. That's it, I didn't feel that for how long this book is drawn out that the author did not give enough character development to Rhys. So the romance kind of fell flat for me, I just couldn't connect to someone I didn't know.

The story itself was nice, nothing to solid. The killer/bad guy is immediately recognizable and nothing really made me think, “Never saw that coming.” The author had a really great idea with these element books and there powers, but didn't do much. We spend a lot of time with Gabe running away from things and trying to paint. One thing I did like was that the sexual tension was high, and the sex scenes were one. I felt like the reader got to spend more time in the story.

The side characters were interesting, I loved the variety. They could have used some more page time, and considering how many pages there is, I felt the love could have been shared.

    Bottom Line:

This book has a lot of potential but lacks an original plot to carry it on. Gabe is a great female lead, but spends too much time running away. The book moves a long at a great pace, but could probably be shorter. In the end it's a really interesting start, there's just too many buts holding it back.

    Sexual Content:

It is a PNR but there's only one sex scene, accompanied by a lot of make out sessions.

    2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out
