Assassin. Soldier. Arrow. That is who Vasic is, who he will always be. His soul drenched in blood, his conscience heavy with the weight of all he’s done, he exists in the shadows, far from the hope his people can almost touch—if only they do not first drown in the murderous insanity of a lethal contagion. To stop the wave of death, Vasic must complete the simplest and most difficult mission of his life.

For if the Psy race is to survive, the empaths must wake…

Having rebuilt her life after medical “treatment” that violated her mind and sought to stifle her abilities, Ivy should have run from the black-clad Arrow with eyes of winter frost. But Ivy Jane has never done what she should. Now, she'll fight for her people, and for this Arrow who stands as her living shield, yet believes he is beyond redemption. But as the world turns to screaming crimson, even Ivy’s fierce will may not be enough to save Vasic from the cold darkness…

Review:

Ah. The sweetness that only Singh's Paranormal Romance books can give me. Silence has officially fallen and now the Psy need a cure. Each new book had me chomping at books for this! While many readers have been unhappy with too much world building and focus on the Psy I've been in heaven. I've said it before and I'll say it again Singh has ruined me for other PNR series. World building. That's the key to any great book. Intricate plots that don't end after the HEA is given to the current lead couples. Follow through. Being able to visit and see how events are affecting beloved couples/characters.

Most importantly the current couple of the book are affected by what is happening in the world. They're fully interacting in it. There's consequences for their actions as well as outside factors altering their lives. So each couple is unique. The process in which they fall in love is unique. Sure it can be said that it's basically the same Happily Ever After formula. But that's true of every romance book. (Except a few brave ones that decide to be different.) No matter what PNR series you read there is a formula. Sure a lot of characters in the Psy-Changeling verse share some fundamental personality traits, morals, and other things. But in the end I know all of the characters and each one has their own personality. Some of those similarities is also what makes characters in Singh's world friends.

OK, I’ve shared my thoughts on that matter. Moving on.

Vasic is a character I’ve always been curious about. Come on he's the kind of character fans of the series just swoon for. Plus, in the past ice cold Psy men have lead to some steamy-steamy reading. Most importantly I always wondered who he would be paired with. Personally I didn't want him to be paired with another warrior. No in my hearts of hearts, I wanted him to be with an Empath. So what a surprise when Ivy walks in. These two are amazing together. That's all I'll say on that matter so nothing is taken away from readers.

What I will say is that Singh does a wonderful job of how “Silence” was probably never truly worked. It was helpful on some levels true. Silence helped  Psychopaths and killers seem legit, while helping those with scary powers. Nothing is black and white. And maybe there are already many Psy not fully Silenced. It's seen here in Ivy's parents. How despite being under Silence they were flawed enough to be parents. To take actions to save their child. For me that made me think of a certain Empath that started this whole series and her relationship with her mother.

Shield Of Winter is intense. I had faith that some type of fix would come, because it was made clear that a number of the Psy characters we've come to love would not abandon ship. That doesn't mean that it was any less intense. When finally the cure is realized, I thought it was perfect. This is a new era for the series and the Psy. The politics, maneuvering, and factions that come up are so realistic that I commend Singh for putting all that extra work in. For making this marvelous world so rich.

Vasic and Ivy's love pulled at my heartstrings. Not to mention Rabbit. Apparently Singh can not only write men, women, children, teens and so on. She can right pets. This is a wonderful stepping stone into the Psy's new future. It's dark, lives are lost, and even with hope at the end of the tunnel there's still plenty of enemies hoping it will fail. But I've always loved the aspects of love, friendship, family, and hope that this series explores. Shield of Winter the perfect follow-up to Heart of Obsidian. Yet again I have more characters to love and care about in one of my favorite series.

Step into New York Times bestseller Nalini Singh’s explosive and shockingly passionate Psy-Changeling world…

A dangerous, volatile rebel, hands stained bloodred.
A woman whose very existence has been erased.
A love story so dark, it may shatter the world itself.
A deadly price that must be paid.
The day of reckoning is here.

From “the alpha author of paranormal romance” (Booklist) comes the most highly anticipated novel of her career—one that blurs the line between madness and genius, between subjugation and liberation, between the living and the dead.

Review:

A masterpiece.

The funny thing is that I have read some amazing titles out there, but I don't think I've truly ever felt compelled enough to proclaim it a masterpiece. What's more shocking is that I would claim the Psy-Changeling series as one of the top Paranormal Romance series out there. It's definitely in my top favorite series list. Which is saying a lot from wishy-washy me. I never claim top ten lists for books, I simply evade. I don't like to play favorites with all the great books out there. However, Singh has created an amazing world with heart, horror, and redemption. Even the weakest book in the series has yet to fail in moving my emotions.

Heart of Obsidian is probably the strongest book in the series. While my heart will always belong to Clay and Talin of Mine to Possess, Heart of Obsidian has carved out a place in my heart and much like Mine to Possess I'll be rereading it many times over. In fact, the length of this series is never intimidating. It's something to revel in and look forward to especially for rereads. It was a bit of a sad thought to know that we'd be stepping away from DarkRiver and the SnowDancers, being a “Psy book”. Singh never leaves her readers hanging, and of course gives plenty of windows into life in both packs. (Trust me I was squeeing so much.)

This book is the one that fans have been foaming at the mouth fort!! Yes, any faithful Psy-Changeling fan new what was coming. That's the power of Singh. The “spoiler” may have been blown in the beginning books, but everything in Heart of Obsidian was so well delivered. The love and passion. Just . . . there are no words.

What's is Heart of Obsidian takes all of the qualities of Beauty and the Beast (or Beauty and the Psycho), young love, first loves, and damaged people spinning a romance that is beyond what I could have hoped for and now secretly want out of every paranormal romance title I will ever read. (Way to set the bar Signh.) The World building just keeps coming. This is the pivotal moment in the Psy Net. The revolution is here, the horror of it and the clash of ideals is mind blowing. Prejudice, controlling powers and the evils along with it, terrorism, societal civil war, and the threat of world war. This title, no the entire series, does what many authors have longed to put into their stories. A sort of realism that covers all grounds of black and white, bleeding into gray. No longer can “real” authors laugh at romance authors. Great authors (cough, Singh, cough) break genre expectations and create masterpieces. (You know who you are naysayers.)

In the end I implore any reader of any genre to read this book. (Honestly, please read this series.) Every point was a hit in Heart of Obsidian and all paranormal titles after this will be compared to the amazingness of this book. Heck let's be honest, this series is now what I crave that any paranormal romance title could just meet half way. The romance is moving, powerful, and haunting. The Psy-Changeling world never takes a back seat, the world building is always front and center. Actions having causes, and not every action will make everything all HEA when the romance is sealed. Sure the couple may end up together but the impact of it on the world may not be so clean cut. Bravo to Singh! With bated breath I await the next book, with no doubts in my mind.

Sexual Content: Sexual humor and steamy scenes! (So yes, there is sex scenes.)

Review: Beyond the Veil

Beyond the Veil (The Veil, book 1) by Pippa Dacosta

beyond-the-veil

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Edition Reviewed: eBook
Amazon: Paperback | Kindle
Goodreads: Beyond the Veil (1)

“They say I’m half a demon, but I like to think of myself as half human, especially as the demons want me dead.”

Charlie Henderson is living a lie. Her real name is Muse and her attempt at a normal life is about to go up in smoke.

When a half-demon assassin walks into her life, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake, Muse must return to the one man she hoped never to see again and ask for help. The Prince of Greed isn’t known for his charity. The price is high and the cost could tear her apart.

Trapped between the malevolent intentions of a Prince of Hell, an assassin with ulterior motives and her bloodthirsty demon-kin, Muse must embrace the lure of chaos at her core; the demon inside her, in order to survive.

If your ex is the Prince of Greed, you’d better be ready to raise hell.

Review:

“I should have known he'd be trouble as soon as he walked into my workshop, but I couldn't have known he'd be the death of me.” - Muse

With that opening sentence I was hooked! Especially since you don't know whether it's pertaining to this book or maybe the next ones? All you know is some awesome fun is about to happen. It also reassured my indie/self-pub fears. I haven't been batting well lately. However, it was clear that DaCosta's writing is on freaking point. There was not a single point where I was cringing due to bad writing/grammar. Thank you.

Once those fears were assuaged it was clear that this was one sexy and wild ride. Especially since the man candy does not fit into the molds of good or bad. No it's more like “wickedly evil” and “so baaaaaaaad but I can't help myself”. Oh, and the cherry on top is that they're demons. Yeah.

“The demon inside his male exterior burned with primal needs. It devoured, it stole, it consumed. He was all greed and desire, always hungry.”

Akil is the Demon Prince of Greed. He's basically Muse's—the main character here, I'll get to her—savior. Or is he? Akil is freaking sex and power personified here, and despite all the twists my lady parts still lust. Speaking of lust, let me tell you about Stephan Harper. Assassin, double agent, spy, killer, mechanic, and all around smexy man. Stephan can't be pinned down. He's a half human/half demon, like Muse, but he is ice where she is fire. Oh, they're fabulous together! Stephan might seem like the standard hero, but his character had just enough twists that trusting him is dangerous. I love that any lover Muse has might be deadly, and might just try to kill her. Come on, it's a dangerous combination that's too good.

Now speaking of Muse, I really enjoyed her. She's not some crazy warrior woman. No. Muse is a half demon. She lived in the netherworld for a time as the property of psycho demon. Torture, rape, and all kinds of nightmares were her life. Until Akil stepped in and helped her to become strong and kill her master. Readers come in as she's living the life of a normal human. She’s a blacksmith and enjoys her average Joe life. Her human boyfriend and feeding her cat. Come on, that can't last!

It's clear that Muse has fire—no pun intended—and she wants to be free. It's clear she’s use to hiding behind people. Not using her inner strength and skills, but relying on others to help save her. But I still like her. She's believable, and after all the stuff she's gone through I can buy just wanting to stick your head in the sand. Pretend nothing happened. Though I'm a big believer in the whole “power is knowledge” thing. So I question as to why she wouldn't try to find away to protect herself when she left Akil's protection. A few times Muse ticked me off with her inability to think. To see where things might end up by. You know thinking things through. Knowing when to bail the hell out.

That's part of her charm. Cause despite that she is believable and I enjoy having a different kind of female lead to the UF genre. Muse embraces her sexuality. No slut shaming here. (I can't believe that's enough of a thing that it's such a joyous thing when I find it.) Love that she's a blacksmith/whatever you want to call it. Though I'm bummed there wasn't more of that here. Even with her iffy survival skills I do like that once she's confronted with the truth she goes forth and seeks answers herself.

The best thing about Beyond the Veil is that one can never be sure about any of the characters. What side they're on and what their agenda is. Because everybody has an agenda. Especially if Muse is involved. Because she's been lied to since birth and there are some secrets and truths that are coming out. The only problem is knowing whether it is actually THE truth.

Beyond the Veil definitely left no doubt in my mind as to whether I'd be continuing this book. Duh! It's a fabulous twisty and dark read. Oh, and that cliffhanger!!! (OK, maybe Stephan is that kind of guy.) Muse is a great lead and she's obviously going to be getting the crash course on what the demon world is really like. Now that she knows the truth about half demons and their power I'm excited to see her become that kick ass heroine. Especially since she's already got the whit to go with it. Come on action scene one liners! Even though she's out of the hands of the demons, for now, the humans might not be any better. (After all she just battled a Prince of Hell and her brother still wants her dead.) I'm looking forward to the full world picture that is teased here. (A little bit after writing this review I bought the rest of the books in the series.)

Sexual Content: Sexual humor and some darker themes.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

The Arcana Chronicles News!

This dropped last week, but I took Thursday and Friday off so I’m posting this now! It’s from Kresley Cole’s official Newsletter.

It’s been pretty hush, hush lately on Kresley Cole news. And it’s all been the bare minimumpoison-princess or nothing. Especially on The Arcana Chronicles. The fact that there was no news on book 4 for or how many more would be in the series made me nervous. The last young adult series I liked this much got cancelled . . .

However, the Arcana Chronicles have been doing really well, sells speaking. So I kept trying to comfort myself that no publisher would cancel a lucrative series. Right?

Well Cole has dropped the news! The Arcana Chronicles “TV & Motion Picture rights have been optioned by a major studio!!”

So I’m guessing all the delays, on all of Cole’s work, have been due to negotiating that. However, I’d never post for that. Unless there’s an actual official trailer nothing is real. No it’s because finally there’s some reassurances about the Arcana Chronicles BOOKs!

45

The 4th one doesn’t have a name yet but it will be released in the spring. (Though she didn’t say 2015 . . .  or any year. But assume 2015.) So far it’s official “. . . that there will be a minimum of five installments in the Chronicles.”

Personally I do not think that is enough books to finish thedead-of-winter tangled games that are the Arcana Chronicles. Or if it is the Cole’s plan I feel like it’s going to end up feeling rushed. The fact that Cole is sticking with the lead female throughout the series has made her have to reach outside of her normal formula and come up with other elements. I’ll be sad to see it end, especially since all of  Cole’s other books/series are suffering from her “Standard Cole Formula”.

So what do you guys think? Interested in seeing the Arcana books into a TV show or movie? Do you think 5 books are enough or that there will (should) be more?

The clock activates so suddenly in my mind, my head involuntarily jerks a bit to the side. The fog vanishes, dissipated in an instant as though it never was. Memories come slotting into place, their edges sharp enough to leave furrows, and suddenly I know. I know exactly who I am.

My name is Lia Johansen, and I was named for a prisoner of war. She lived in the Tiersten Internment Colony for two years, and when they negotiated the return of the prisoners, I was given her memories and sent back in her place.

And I am a genetically engineered human bomb.

Lia Johansen was created for only one purpose: to slip onto the strategically placed New Sol Space Station and explode. But her mission goes to hell when her clock malfunctions, freezing her countdown with just two minutes to go. With no Plan B, no memories of her past, and no identity besides a name stolen from a dead POW, Lia has no idea what to do next. Her life gets even more complicated when she meets Michael Sorenson, the real Lia’s childhood best friend.

Drawn to Michael and his family against her better judgment, Lia starts learning what it means to live and love, and to be human. It is only when her countdown clock begins sporadically losing time that she realizes even duds can still blow up. If she wants any chance at a future, she must find a way to unlock the secrets of her past and stop her clock. But as Lia digs into her origins, she begins to suspect there’s far more to her mission and to this war, than meets the eye. With the fate of not just a space station but an entire empire hanging in the balance, Lia races to find the truth before her time—literally—runs out.

The girl is basically a clone and a walking human bomb! HOLY SCI-FI AWESOMENESS!

Hollie hopes to find her beloved otters in the wilds of the Great White North, but instead she’s providing comic relief for staff and guests alike. Even Concierge Ryan, a former NHL star with bad knees and broken dreams, can’t stop her from stumbling from one (mis)adventure to another. Just when Hollie starts to think that a change of venue doesn’t mean a change in circumstances, the island works its charm and she starts to think she might have found the rejuvenation she so desperately desires. But then an uninvited guest crashes the party, forcing her to step out of the discomfort zone where she dwells and save the day … and maybe even herself in the process.

This is not my normal bread and butter. But it sounds like crazy fun. Plus, everyone says it makes you laugh.

Tee-hee. I already bought this one.
