Review:

Another solid and awesome entry to one of my favorite Urban Fantasy series. Well one of my favorite series period. This one was a bit more predictable I admit. However, I like that it showcased Kate and Curran's trust in one another. Their discussions and relationship is so real. That's always been the greatest appeal of them and the story in the Kate Daniels verse. Well that and awesome characters with tons of depth! Boom! Of course we can't forget the witty banter.

I did enjoy that Kate got some revenge on Curran when he did THAT THING WHICH I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT that he did behind her back without her knowledge. Which is about time. (No matter what's happened after I'm still kind of steaming about it.) Of course I don't think he suffered as much. (What can I say I'm blood thirsty!)

The true joy of Magic Binds is the side characters. Roman is pretty present and is the force behind getting Kate's wedding planned. Yes. It is every bit of epic as you could imagine. Finally Curran gets his eyes open in regards to Jim. I have never liked Jim so I say it's about time. Each book he becomes an even bigger ass. The Andrews team is slowly wooing me into Derek and Julie relationship. (That's not a spoiler, if you guys are this far in you can't have not noticed the queues. If they don't end up together that will be the big shock.) Andrea starts out preggos and not by the end of the book! Yeah! So fun. Big reveals for many characters, old ones brought back, and so on. Truly a blast and for me where the real awesome aspects of the story lay.

It's really interesting watching Roland and Kate battle it out. Kate finding out how much she truly doesn't know about her powers and the land. Not to mention the struggle to change the future so that Curran and their not yet conceived son don't end up getting killed. It's an emotional wild ride that has the whole fate of Atlanta hanging the balance.

The Guild and the people there have always been something that interests me and I really wished they could have had even more time. Magic Binds felt more like a setup and a stepping stone to get to the boss fight.

At the end of this book my biggest question is what exactly happened to the flying horse? That after all was the closest thing to rainbow powers Kate got.

Content Warning: Sex scenes, but they're not graphic. The usual Kate humor and the violence. There's some minor cannibalism (wow, I've read enough cannibalistic books that I now use "minor" to describe it!). Brainwashed victim. Nothing shocking.

I took last week off. Two of my chickens passed. One was a mercy kill and the other was 17 years old this year.

I took my 17 year old's death the hardest. We had gotten to a point where I had to take her out of the coop in the morning and tuck her in and night. Oddly enough I didn't mind doing it, even in the harsh winter. We depended on each other. It's always hard when something you've taken care of and loved that long suddenly isn't there anymore.

Anywho. So yeah, I didn't post last week.

Review:

Hmmm. An interesting short and I believe a fun introduction to what could be a fantastic new series. I did feel that some of the mythology was sketchy. It didn't fully develop the world in a timely fashion.  Like letting readers know how much of the paranormal is known and so on. Not to mention what kinds of paranormal is out there.

The short didn't fully sell me on the lead or what I would assume is the cast of characters that would occupy the series. (If it was indeed made into a series.) That's the problem with shorts. Most of the time it's just not enough to establish a story properly. They tend to be good for snippets for series that are already being devoured and the mytho established.

However, I loved the writing style and with this I would be very interested if it turned out to be a series. The world, once established, was fun and I think plenty of room for potential. Not to mention that I'm interested enough about the lead to go forth and see a more developed version of him. I had a fun time and it was perfect for a quick read.

Content Warning: Some sexual humor and violent deaths. Nothing truly shocking or surprising.

Wednesday Wishes

If you guys have, or haven't, noticed I've been playing around with the idea of changing my "Sexual Content" section on my reviews to "Content Warning". As I sometimes tack on additional things of note besides sexual content. Such as cannibalism, mass murder and such.

So someone told me "Content Warning" is harsh. Though I have a feeling they would have been okay if I had put "homosexual themes" under "Sexual Content" like a normally do. (Cause I haven't gotten one complaint about that.)

"Content Warning" just seems logical to me and fitting. Because sometimes all I can put for "Sexual Content" is "clean" and then I need a spot to put "someone got their head gruesomely chopped off". Or something. 

So you might see "Sexual Content" and "Content Warning" duking it out. Or something totally different. We'll see.

Because I do believe this is supposed to be Contemporary Romance with Suspense or something. Either way the reviews make this sound amazing and I have been craving some books outside of my genre zone to freak my mind out.

Review:

"Romeo and Juliet meets Sabriel"

Those were the words that first appeared in the synopsis space, and I was sold. Despite the fact that I am not a Romeo and Juliet fan. I will always pick any other Shakespeare work over that one. However, I respect it immensely. Not to mention that I have serious author love/obsession for Hodge. So I knew she'd just blow my mind. However, this is not anywhere close to Sabriel. Though I do see where some very minor similarities may be compared. I acknowledge it. Such as the idea of walking into death. However, Romeo+Juiet+Zombies+Necromancers would be more apt.

Now let me address one of my main dislikes with the whole Romeo and Juliet love story: it's one of the original instalove crap fests. Piled with a huge amount of angst on top. No matter the pretty words, I never bought their love. Sorry. Instalove ain't real. Looks and lust was what always convinced me was their motivations. They killed themselves out of stupidity. So my biggest fear going into this was at what point in Juliet and Romeo's love story would it start at? Hmmmm? Well it's at the end and they're about to die.

Pretty darn thrilling if you ask me.

Hodge does a wonderful job at inserting flashbacks to twist the original story into a much better romance. I dug it. Sure, it is instalove. Yet even Romeo admitted that it wasn't immediate and that it did take action not looks to sway his heart. So points there. They also had TIME to fall in love and interact with each other.

Hodge's writing is so beautiful and I loved her turn of phrase. Especially when she would take the iconic lines or moments of the original story. Even poking fun at Romeo. He is a bit of a silly boy, but I like that Hodge made him seem more realistic as she developed her version of Romeo.

Juliet is pretty bad ass. I won't lie. Though she's very distant and it's surprising that she would fall for foolish Romeo. At first. Again well done to Hodge. I could see why she fell for him. Though there is a coldness to Juliet's character that kept me at arms length. In fact, that happened to more than one character. The other female lead Runajo. Both girls are immensely fascinating. They're eventual friendship was cool. (Some WOMANCE going on!) However, these ladies are missing some humanity. Interesting and complex doesn't even cover their pasts and lives. Though at many times I could very easily see them as serial killers. Someone even kind of calls Runajo out on it. Runajo has issues getting in touch with her human emotions. (You know, she's puts them in a box. Puts that box in another box . . . )

So yeah, it's complicated.

The odd thing is that I had more fun when Paris was telling the story. Especially as he and Romeo develop their bromance. That was cool. My other favorite is Vai. Totally awesome he was! Even more bromance. *wink* I found the whole story of Paris discovering the truth about his clan, the Catresou clan, and his loss of innocence excellently explored. (Holy cow where he ended up in the cliffhanger!!!!!!!!)

I enjoy that it is a battle of powers. The Catresou are Juliet's people. The Mahyanai Romeo's. However, there are other powers such as the Sisters of Thorn to add to the mix. The mysterious necromancer. The family's and power houses of the city of Viyara are duking it out! Sadly I felt like that was secondary until things really started to get exciting towards the end.

My issue with Bright Smoke, Cold Fire is that it might be a tad standoffish. Not to mention that evil cliffhanger. Good lord, I'm getting tired of what constitutes as a cliffhanger anymore. It basically just ends after everything was really getting good. I hated it. I'm a little ticked. Other than that I was totally addicted. Hodge created another fabulous world with all kinds of awesome magic. I felt like there could have been more revealed about the magic and such. Especially the necromancers. It also saddened me how freaking stupid Runajo ended up being at the end, since she was totally awesome before that. Still I was addicted. Just promise me the next book will be out next year. Though I'm really nervous how the next book will stand. Paris was the star of this book for me.

Content Warning: Sexual humor, yes. Some slut shaming due to the beliefs of certain people. There is a sex scene, but it is not explicit or really delved into.

Dead things, murder, mass murder, actual human sacrifices, and so on. This is a darker read. Also deals with racism, class systems, and some sexism.

Movie talk. So while at the Redbox I ended up in a talk about great movies with some people. Where so far there movies of the year happened to be Finding Dorie, Captain America: Winter Soldier, and You Before Me. However, none of those would have even made my list by default. I was baffled that these fellow "movie buffs" hadn't even heard of The Nice Guys. A movie I fond to have phenumial writing, acting, and visually stunning. It was action packed, moments of horror, sexy times, and plenty of brilliant humor.

They hadn't even watched The Shallows.

Movie snooting aside, I started to wonder why people don't branch out from the block busters more? I enjoy them, but most of the time I kind of end up more bored than entertained anymore.

While great books may not always be able to escape bad covers, it's nice to know the publishers are confidant enough in this series to keep going with them.
